Widgets on iPhone & iPad
Put Plannie on your Home Screen, Lock Screen and StandBy: what each widget shows, how to set it up, and what you can tick off without opening the app.
Plannie's iPhone and iPad app comes with a family of widgets. Put today's events, one list, a member's chores, tonight's dinner or the whole family's day straight on your Home Screen, Lock Screen or StandBy — and tick things off without opening the app.
Widgets come with the native app, so you need it installed and signed in: see Plannie on iPhone & iPad. Widgets for Android are on the way.
Adding a widget
- Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen until the icons jiggle, then tap Edit → Add Widget (on older iOS versions, the + in the corner).
- Search for Plannie and pick the card you want. Swipe through the sizes before you tap Add Widget — most Plannie widgets come in several.
- To change what a widget shows, touch and hold it and tap Edit Widget.
On the Lock Screen, touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, then a widget slot, and pick a Plannie widget. Lock Screen widgets also show up in StandBy when an iPhone is charging on its side.
What each widget shows
- Today — your next events and the top of a list in one card. The large size adds an Up next block, how many chores are left, and a Tonight footer with the planned dinner. There are Lock Screen versions too: a rectangle with the next event, a one-line summary, and a done/total ring.
- Calendar — events only. Small shows the next one, medium the rest of the day in two columns, large today plus tomorrow, and extra large (iPad) a week strip with a column per day. From 20:00, a card set to Today switches to tomorrow's events, so an evening glance shows what's actually next.
- List — one list, with more room than Today: four rows small, eight medium, twelve large, grouped under the list's headings on the large card. See Shopping & custom lists.
- Chores — one family member's chores for today with check-off, their ticket or star balance, and how far off the next reward is. The one for a kid's iPad. Also available as a Lock Screen ring. See Setting up Habits & chores.
- Meals — tonight's dinner or the week ahead, on either size, with a food sticker to match the dish. It follows dinner unless you set it to lunch. Tap it to open the recipe or that day in the meal planner. See Planning your week's meals.
- Quick actions — two to four buttons that drop you straight into the right place: Add item, Add event, Add chore and Ask Plannie.
- Ask Plannie — a card with a suggested question that changes through the day ("What's for dinner tonight?" around lunch, "What's on tomorrow?" in the evening). Tap it and the chat opens with that question already in the box — nothing is sent until you press send. See Meet Plannie Assistant.
- Family board — a column per family member with their next events, today's chores (tickable) and how many list items are still open. Large, and extra large on iPad — the mini home hub for a kitchen iPad.
Choosing what a widget shows
Touch and hold a widget and tap Edit Widget. Each widget only offers the settings that apply to it:
- Choose list — which list the tasks come from. Defaults to your first Favourites list, otherwise your first list. (Today, List)
- Choose calendar — whose events show. Defaults to everyone. (Today, Calendar)
- Which tasks — All tasks, Mine, Unassigned or Mine + unassigned. (Today, List)
- Show completed — include ticked items, after the open ones. Off by default. (List)
- Range — Today, Tomorrow or This week. (Calendar)
- Whose chores — the family member whose chores the card shows. (Chores)
- Buttons — which two to four quick actions appear. (Quick actions)
- Show — Automatic, Today or This week. Automatic means today's meal on the small card and the week on the medium one; either size can be set to the other. (Meals)
- Meal — Dinner or Lunch, so a card can follow the meal you actually plan. Dinner by default. (Meals)
- Choose members — who gets a column. Everyone by default. (Family board)
- Show date — the little date chip in the corner. On by default; turning it off keeps the count and the + where they are. (Today, Calendar, List, Chores, Family board)
Tapping and ticking
Widgets aren't only for looking at:
- Tick a task or a chore right on the widget and it's done in Plannie — no app launch, and everyone else sees it.
- The + button adds something: on Today and List it opens that list with the new-row cursor waiting, on Calendar it opens the event composer for the day you're looking at.
- Tapping an event opens that day in the calendar; tapping a task opens its list; tapping a meal opens the recipe or the meal planner.
If a widget looks stale or empty
- "Open Plannie to sign in" means the app on this device is signed out. Open Plannie, sign in, and the widgets fill in by themselves.
- "Couldn't reach Plannie · Tap to try again" means the phone couldn't reach us just then — no signal, or we were briefly down. Tap the card to open the app, which refreshes every widget.
- iOS decides how often a widget may refresh, so a card can be a few minutes behind. Opening Plannie, or changing something in it, updates the widgets right away.
